Film + TV Magazines - Effects of Codes and Conventions

Within the television and entertainment industry and in terms of genre of magazine, there are lots of different types of magazines. Some of these include film magazines, like Empire and Total Film, whilst types of television magazines include What’s On TV, TV Choice and Inside Soap. Each of these detail or expand on the latest goings-on in terms of television, film and entertainment.

Total Film and Empire both illustrate and print the news surrounding films across the world, including the latest block-busters and updates on the newest, incoming films or sequels. Displayed above, Total Film has displayed an image of the Joker, who is an iconic villain, very first created in the comic, Batman. This will identify with the audience who recognise the long-standing villainous figure, with the words “Joker” displayed across the page and it will intrigue them into reading the magazine and finding out what is in it. The target audience with Total Film will primarily be aimed at an older audience, since they will have been invested in the old Batman, which is being regenerated into something more new and fresh, so they will essentially still be interested, whilst a new, younger type of audience will also be brought in. Whereas with Empire on the other hand, they have used Harry Potter with their target audience, which is primarily of a younger age range, since it is adapted from J.K. Rowling’s books that were designed and created for children to read. However, this theory could be rubbished as it’s clear that the Harry Potter films get darker as they progress, veering further away from a younger target audience and more towards late teens/young adults due to the frightening and dark nature of some of the films. One of the covers used by Empire for Harry Potter shows the film series’ three primary characters- Harry, Ron and Hermione, with quite a dramatic stance and presented in quite a grand way, a tactic used to try and draw in the target audience to reading the magazine and the section that features Harry Potter, which is advertised and promoted on the front cover as being the main feature story within the magazine. The other cover advertising Harry Potter shows quite a bloody, gory side that perhaps doesn’t appeal to children and more of a young audience within the late teens to young adults sector of target audiences.
